Arnold Bocklin - Self-Portrait with Death Playing the Violin, 1872

75cm x 61cm, oil on canvas

Bocklin's original title "A Painting to Dream On"

Bocklin concentrated on his own special themes and developed his own coloring principals, primarily relying upon gray, brown and blue tones, though his images usually reproduce in books with a great deal of black which is not actually present in the paintings themselves. He also endeavored to avoid brush stroke impasto upon the surface, instead trying for the most seamless physical presentation of his imagery.
